Hell Reading Challenge

Read 7 Books and get a free pizza!

We have signed up to be part of the Hell Reading Challenge. This Challenge is run by the Book Awards Trust in partnership with Hell Pizza. Every child who takes part gets a free pizza when they have read 7 books. Your children may be involved in this already through their school or local library. If not, it's very easy to do and a great incentive for children to do some reading, particularly over the school holidays. Visit us to sign up and get your pizza wheel. For every book that is read the child gets a stamp on a segment of the wheel. We will ask the child to fill in a brief review sheet as proof that they've read the book. Get the review sheets from the shop or download a copy using the button below. When all 7 segments of the pizza wheel are filled in get us to verify it and then head to any Hell pizza branch to claim your free kids pizza!

A few that have caught our attention are shown below. Don't forget to follow us on Facebook and Instagram to get updates on new releases as they arrive in the shop.

The Adventures of Tupaia by Courtney Sina Meredith, illustrated by Mat Tait

We were lucky enough to have Courtney and Mat the author and illustrator of this book (pictured above with Helen) visit the shop last week. It tells the story of Tupaia the renowned navigator and priest who travelled to New Zealand with Captain Cook from his home in Tahiti. A wonderful mix of the graphical, poetical and factual, the book gives a very different perspective on the impact of the first European contact made in Aotearoa. We currently have some copies of the book signed by Mat and Courtney so be in quick to get one of those! Suitable for ages 8 and up. $35

First Map by Tessa Duder, illustrated by David Elliot

This special non-fiction book is the story of how Captain Cook made the first map of New Zealand. It dovetails well with the book about Tupaia and both books feature Tupaia's extraordinary map of the Pacific Islands. The history is presented in a readable, accessible style with wonderful drawings by David Elliot. Recommended for ages 10 and up. $49.99

Prince of Ponies by Stacy Gregg

Set in Berlin, this is another absorbing novel from Stacy Gregg. Twelve year old Mira comes across a white stallion in a forest and then meets Zofia an old woman who has a special favour to ask of Mira. The story moves between Mira's life as a Syrian refugee in the present day and  1939 in Nazi Germany. Horses are of course the link between the two and once again Stacy Gregg has managed to produce a moving and evocative book. Recommended even if you aren't a horse nut! 8-12 year-olds. $25

Knock Three Times by Cressida Cowell

This is the third adventure for Xar, a Warrior girl and Wish, a Wizard boy. They are on the run from both the Warriors and the Wizards and also, most frighteningly, the Witches. Cressida Cowell (the current Children's Laureate in the UK) has written another scary and magical adventure with the two fugitives setting out to find a spell to get rid of Witches.  Of course nothing goes quite to plan... For ages 9-12 $21.99

Show and Tell by Rob Biddulph

A clever and vivid picture book about a very over-the-top Show and Tell from Class 2L. Rob Biddulph's wonderful rhyme and illustration make this a very fun read aloud book. There are so many lovely details and a heart warming message about how simple is often best. $25

The Gobbledegook Book
by Joy Cowley, illustrated by Giselle Clarkson

This is a gorgeous compendium of poems and stories by Joy Cowley. From Greedy Cat to the Jumbaroo and from Uncle Andy's singlet to Billy Castor every word is a delight. Beautifully illustrated by Giselle Clarkson (who will be at our Book Feast festival). Every family should have a copy! $39.99

Moonlight the Unicorn's High Tea Hiccup by Sally Sutton

This is the eagerly awaited, sixth story in the Miniwings series. This time it is Moonlight's turn to feature. Clara and Sophia get invited to high tea with their honourary great aunties. Somehow the Miniwings manage to crash the party so a bit of mayhem ensues. Another great read from Sally Sutton (guest author at our Book Feast Festival) for those aged 5-9. $14.99

Madame Badobedah by Sophie Dahl (granddaughter of Roald)

Mabel is a resident at The Mermad Hotel, run by her parents somewhere by the English seaside. One day a most unusual and slightly rude guest arrives and Mabel names her Madame Badobedah (rhymes with ooooh la la).Mabel is sure that this guest is a villain on the run from the police and sets out to prove it. What she discovers is a lonely and mysterious old lady who turns out to be a wonderful playmate. Lovely writing, gorgeous illustration. Great  for 4-8-year-olds. $28.99

A First Book of NZ Backyard Bird Songs

A fabulous book for any beginning bird watcher. The small format is ideal to take on walks or just into the backyard to check on identification of some of the most common New Zealand birds. It is great to have the sound of each of the birds in additon to photos and some pertinent facts about each of the 12 species in the book. Useful for any age from 5 and up. $24.99

Beverly, Right Here by Kate DiCamillo

This is the third in a series of stand alone stories about three friends by beloved author Kate DiCamillo. Beverly's story is as poignant and rings as true as those of her friends Raymie and Louisiana. Highly recommended. $22.99
